Shaggy dog breeds are known for their long, soft, and fluffy coats, which can require more grooming and maintenance than other breeds. Nearly twenty breeds are considered “shaggy dogs,” so today, we’ve compiled a list of those twenty who will stand by your side and be the most faithful furry friends!
Havanese
The Havanese may be the perfect choice if you’re looking for a family dog. These pups are incredibly friendly and have a fabulous coat! Havanese canines are affectionate and great with other dogs and children. Originally from Cuba, these dogs make great pets for city life due to their friendly and extroverted personalities. Havanese need daily grooming and frequent haircuts due to quick regrowth.
Yorkshire Terrier
These sassy furry friends are known for their long brown and black hair and versatility in hair length. The Yorkie is highly affectionate and terrific with kids. However, Yorkies are known to be stubborn, so if you find a companion in this shaggy pup, consider obedience training and socialization as early as possible.
Collie
Collies are one of the most intelligent dog breeds and are known to crave human interaction and stimulation. These shaggy dogs come in two coat varieties: smooth and rough. Both are family-friendly and get along exceptionally well with children. Collies have a lot of energy and are great for active families.
Old English Sheepdog
Old English Sheepdogs are affectionate herd dogs that enjoy hard work and mental stimulation. Their double coats require grooming at least twice a week to minimize hair shed around the house. Low maintenance and very friendly, you won’t regret bringing this active canine into your family. It suggested getting this breed behavior training from an early age and teaching them basic commands often; they are eager to learn how to sit, speak, and stay!
Briard
The Briard is a hypoallergenic breed with a long, wavy coat and even a beard! These pups need regular grooming and also prefer quality time, so brushing and cuddling this doggie goes a long way in furthering your connection. Briards are sweet, high energy, and highly protective.
Bearded Collie
This next canine has beautiful, long fur. With a lot of shedding, the bearded collie needs lots of daily brushing. Originally used as herd dogs, their lengthy coats keep these pups warm all year round. Experts suggest lots of socialization for these friendly dogs; they crave interaction and can also be very independent.
Barbet
This sweet-natured pooch is excellent for active families seeking an agile exercise partner. Barbets have long, black, gray, or brown coats with natural curls. Groomers recommend cutting their fur at least five inches from their body for the best look, but Barbets can look adorable anyway. These pups are great hunters and love to play with their human counterparts!
Schapendoes
Our last shaggy companion is the Schapendoes, also known as “Dutch Sheepdogs.” These pups are incredibly lively and friendly. No one or canine is a stranger to Schapendoes, so socialize and train these pups early on. Keeping these dogs busy and exercising is also recommended to prevent behavioral issues. Coming in multiple colors, make sure to groom often to avoid knots and tangles throughout the under and overcoat!
